Safety boots: ratings explained
Safety boots are rated under the European standard EN ISO 20345. The letters tell you what protection you're getting. Always check what your site or employer requires.
The ratings in plain English
- SB: protective toe cap (the minimum).
- S1: toe cap, closed heel, anti-static, energy-absorbing heel.
- S1P: S1 plus a midsole that resists nails and sharp objects. Popular for dry sites.
- S3: S1P plus water-resistant upper and cleated sole. The usual choice for outdoor building sites.
Which trade needs what
- Groundworks, building, roofing: S3, ideally with ankle support.
- Electricians: look for boots rated for electrical hazard if your work needs it, and non-metallic toe caps.
- Warehouse and indoor work: S1P trainers-style boots are lighter and comfier.
Fit and comfort tips
- Try boots on at the end of the day when feet are biggest, with your usual work socks.
- Composite toe caps are lighter than steel and don't conduct cold.
- Rigger boots slip on fast but give less ankle support than lace-ups.
